As a result of a research study released by Devicescape on November of last year titled “Making Connections: Wi-Fi on the UK High Street”, a list of the top high-street brands offering free high-quality Wi-Fi was published. The rankings were based on the quality of a connection, usage and accessibility to the network. Although free Wi-Fi is often associated with food and entertainment industries, the retail sector is not far behind and high-quality Wi-Fi is a service currently being offered in many stores across the UK. The joint partnership formed recently by Telstra and the Tasmanian Government provides free public Wi-Fi to the masses in popular and frequently visited sites in Tasmania, Australia.
In order to enlarge the Telstra Air network in Australia, a partnership has been formed between Telstra and the Tasmanian government to launch the Tasmanian Wi-Fi network which has since deployed over 40 public hotspots throughout Tasmania. This network was designed to provide a service for free public Wi-Fi in 47 location across Tasmania. Currently, only ⅓ of the total 150 Wi-Fi hotspots have been provisioned, in locations frequented by both tourists and residents, such as council parks, civic spaces, Telstra payphones, airports and other commercial sites, to name a few.
