The world’s largest Wi-Fi project will be in Delhi, India
The AAP political party in India promises to bridge the digital divide in Delhi by making it a Wi-Fi City.A good chunk of Delhi’s youth can’t wait to see this project become a reality.
Delhi is moving forward in its transition into a Smart metropolis by promising to provide a citywide Wi-Fi network. The idea is that everybody can access a restricted list of websites (like government websites and other public services) for free during a limited period of time (between 15 to 30 minutes), and access websites like YouTube or others streaming platforms for a small fee. Though nothing has been made official yet, the possibility of purchasing additional Wi-Fi time (more than 30 minutes) may also be available to users.
Wi-Fi authentication will be available through social login or via email verification in order to capture user data (from both locals and tourists) and create and deliver personalized content, such as newsletters.
As the Delhi region runs across 1.484 km², Delhi’s public Wi-Fi network would represent the largest Wi-Fi network ever deployed in a city. Unfortunately, there will be some unconnected area and it will not possible to cover all the territory with the Wi-Fi network, and guarantee roaming. The network will consist of Wi-Fi hotspots spread throughout the city, with a concentration in Delhi’s most public and touristic areas. The most similar project is Taipei’s Wi-Fi network, known to be the best public Wi-Fi system in the world, composed of more than 4.000 hotspots throughout 271.8km². Delhi’s citywide network requires more than 21k wireless devices around the city to achieve the level of coverage of the Taiwanese Wi-Fi network.
Few internet companies in Delhi have confirmed the feasibility of the project and have estimated a budget of approximately Rs 2.5B ( $38M). Although Wi-Fi is not an expensive technology and the network is quick to set up (around 6 months for the whole installation), it will be a very big challenge. The Indian population have high expectations for this Wi-Fi network to help bridge the digital gap among inhabitants, develop new businesses, and enhance women’s safety around the city by providing a platform where they can reach out for help quickly in case of an assault.

Spacious turns restaurants into co-working spaces with Wi-Fi network
Spacious is a NYC based startup co-founded by Preston Pesek and Chris Smothers that turns empty restaurants into co-working spaces with their own Wi-Fi network.
With more than 2.000 restaurants closed in the afternoon throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, NYC has a large capacity of extra space to offer. Spacious is a young startup that creates a business from this situation by renting restaurant spaces during the afternoon to people looking for a space to work. As most of these restaurants are usually closed until 6 p.m, when the restaurant space is not being used, Spacious transforms these empty spaces into the perfect workspaces. Spacious offers two kinds of passes for the workspaces: the unlimited access and the one-day access pass. The startup provides unlimited coffee, background music, managers that take care of the workers, free Wi-Fi networks in all locations.
Of course, Wi-Fi is fundamental to Spacious’ success, as the internet is nowadays indispensable for workers. Spacious has to guarantee workers the access and the possibility to surf the web without any limits. Workers that come back to the same location multiple times are remembered by the network and automatically logged in, for a “Wi-Fi like at home” experience, that makes them feel like they are in their personal office space.
Spacious also offers smart application services that facilitate simple tasks and allow workers to focus on what they are doing. Once a person is checked in with the host upon arrival, they can easily access the Wi-Fi network, receive a message when their guests arrive and when there is the last call for coffee.
Not to mention, it’s truly a win-win situation for all. Part of the revenue collected by Spacious is shared with the owner of the restaurant, and thanks to the popular workspaces this provides free advertising for the restaurant by making the location of the restaurant known and encouraging people to visit the location during restaurant hours.
Currently, Spacious has about 50 restaurants in its network, and this is only the beginning as the project is simple, smart, and easy to setup. Spacious is a smart example of why it is essential to deploy a Wi-Fi networks in public spaces, like restaurants and coworking spaces!
Nowadays, the internet offers a lot of possibilities, and deploying WiFi in schools and universities can improve the way students learn and change the way teachers communicate.
Setting up a Wi-Fi network in schools and universities is often a big challenge. You have to develop a core infrastructure that can support thousands of students, faculty, and visitors accessing the school’s private network simultaneously. So, before configuring your Wi-Fi network, you should take into consideration the following points:
During their free time, 2 out of 5 internet users in Spain spend more than 3 hours per day online.
According to a study by Nominalia, 2 of every 5 internet users in Spain spend more than 3 hours per day on the Internet during their leisure time and for non work-related purposes. (more…)
A vulnerability in Apple’s Airport Express Base Station could facilitate hackers taking control of your network. So if you have yet to update your firmware, we recommend you do so in order to prevent any risk of intrusion.
Apple announced a security vulnerability with the Airport Express Router which could lead to malware attacks. Apple stated that the “memory corruption issue [that] existed in DNS data parsing” could allow an attacker to execute code on devices connected to a network. Even if no reports of this vulnerability have been exploited so far, current users of the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or AirPort Time Capsule (with WiFi 4 or WiFi 5), should update their router firmware to prevent any risk of intrusion from hackers.
