Free Wi-Fi access in the TGV trains in 2017

 

The French public railway company, SNCF, chose the French internet operator, Orange, to provide a free Wi-Fi connection on high-speed trains (TGV). The Wi-Fi service should be available in early 2017 in more than 300 selected trains.

The Wi-Fi service should be available in early 2017 in more than 300 selected trains. - The free Internet connection will be available on the train for many different devices.

Guillaume Pépy, director of the SNCF, promises that a free Wi-Fi connection will be available in more than 300 TGV in 2017. The SNCF is lagging behind its European neighbours, such as Germany and United-Kingdom, who have already proposed a Wi-Fi connection on their high-speed trains. The SNCF chose to team up on this project with French internet operator, Orange. (more…)

Japan’s emergency free public Wi-Fi hotspots

 

After the 2011 earthquakes in Tōhoku, Japanese Telecom carriers decided to provide free public Wi-Fi hotspots to make communication easier in the affected areas.

As a result of the powerful earthquake that hit Japan in 2011, media organizations and mobile phone carriers were prompt in providing temporary free Wi-Fi connectivity, in order to enable citizens and tourists in affected areas to communicate with their families. This has been very useful since the latest earthquakes hit the region of Kumamoto earlier this month.

As a result, Amazon has invested in Luma, a new home Wi-Fi system, created by network security experts, designed to deliver improved broadband coverage in every corner of the house, even if the device is located far from the central router. The Luma device has a hexagon shape, is palm-sized and provides a high-performance solution for deploying Wi-Fi.

Google’s Sidewalk Labs plans to build the city of the future

 

Google’s Sidewalk Labs, in collaboration with the Federal Government, plans to use its Big Data to set up the city of the future.

Google, in collaboration with the Federal Government, plans to use its Big Data to set up the city of the future - Google future cityThe Department of Transportation announced that it joined the Smart City Challenge, together with Google’s smart-cities research unit – the Sidewalk Labs. The challenge calls for medium-sized cities to pitch an idea on how they would put to use automated vehicles, open data, and on-demand services. The city with the best pitch gets a reward of 50 million Dollars. These cities are given a 3-month-deadline and are granted 100,000 Dollars by the Department of Transport (DOT) to create and submit their plans. The seven cities that have reached the final round of the Smart City challenge contest are Austin, Denver, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Kansas City, San Francisco, and Portland.
