MIT invents a system for Wi-Fi localization with a single access point

Chronos is an innovative system for Wi-Fi position tracking, developed by MIT, that can help us provide intelligent free Wi-Fi, design smarter houses and produce safer drones.

csaillogo.gifA team of researchers at CSAIL (MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligent Laboratory) recently developed an innovative system, called Chronos, for accurate Wi-Fi position tracking of clients: thanks to this system, a single access point is now able to locate a Wi-Fi client at a decimeter-level. Ubiquiti APs used for free Wi-Fi at Idomeni refugee camp

In September 2015, Ilias Papadopoulos brought a free Wi-Fi connection to a refugee camp in Idomeni, Greece using Ubiquiti APs.

Ilias Papadopoulos, an electrical engineer from Greece, first arrived at the refugee camp in August 2015 to research how he could help the refugees in this camp. Though the Idomeni refugee camp can only accommodate 4,000 people, the number of the population grew to 13,000. The first thing Papadopoulos noticed upon his arrival was that the majority of the refugees owned cell phones without SIM cards. (more…)

Wi-Fi tracking positively impacts pedestrian behavior

Wireless networks are gathering data regarding pedestrian behavior through Wi-Fi tracking.

Walking in public spaces means passing through numerous wireless networks being accessed by Wi-Fi enabled devices. Even when Wi-Fi enabled devices are not connected to these wireless networks, Wi-Fi encountered signals can still track the bypassers, raising pedestrian’s concerns over privacy infringement. Through collecting data on pedestrian behavior through Wi-Fi networks often comes at a cost of privacy, this data can highly benefit the public good.

802.11ax: The next Wi-Fi standard

The next WiFi standard upgrade 802.11ax will deliver a faster performance speed in high-density deployment in comparison to precedent standards.

Each Wi-Fi standard includes identifying properties, specific to each upgrade, such as maximum range, bandwidth, speed or number of channels of a particular device. The 802.11ax Wi-Fi standard, for instance, still at a very early stage of its development, will be primarily designed for high-density deployments in public places.
